Veterans should be hired for valuable skills

The Sept. 5 article “Veterans face tough job hunts” is generally positive. However, the statement “There's a big separation between what the economy needs and the training they've received” is disturbing. This attitude may be part of the reason veterans aren't more valued by employers. The military does a lot more than “train to kill.”
Most companies are eager to hire employees who can make decisions and work as part of a team. Veterans are trained to quickly evaluate situations and make decisions that sometimes have life or death consequences. The emphasis on teamwork is paramount throughout their military career.
Many companies value diversity. Members of the military train and live in a diverse environment. Veterans learn to trust competent teammates without regard for their racial, ethnic or religious differences.
Veterans know how to operate effectively within an organization. Yet they are encouraged throughout their military career to take initiative and be creative. The military provides outstanding leadership training. Companies should hire veterans, who volunteer to risk their lives in service, because they have valuable skills, not just because of a tax credit.
