Bullying a bully won’t solve any problems

In his Sept. 1 letter, “Public humiliation would end bullying,” Steven Bristow wrote that schools should have lie detectors used on suspected bullies. If found guilty, the student would have to put on gloves and get in the ring with a Jayne Boyd boxer who is the same age and weight. The author says this would stop bullying because the bully would be humiliated in front of everyone and this punishment would be more beneficial than a suspension or counseling.
Being a parent myself, I could see how a parent could feel like this. Bullying is a serious issue in schools. But I don't think this would solve anything. Two wrongs don't make a right. He is saying “bully a bully.”
I agree that bullies need harsher punishments. Out-of-school suspensions are pointless. In-school suspensions could be beneficial. The student would be in a quiet room doing busy work without any interaction. There is also anger management and juvenile probation for repeated offenders.
