The postseason for fall prep golf has arrived. Class 4A teams will compete in four 13-team district meets Tuesday, attempting to qualify for the state tournament Oct. 7-8 at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Washington, Cedar Rapids Xavier and Linn-Mar will compete at a district meet hosted by Cedar Falls at Pheasant Ridge Golf Course. The meet also includes all three Dubuque schools, both Waterloo schools, Marshalltown and Mason City.
The field is loaded with six teams ranked in the top 19. Kennedy, the state runner-up in 2010, and Xavier were Mississippi Valley Conference divisional champions. Linn-Mar was runner-up to the Cougars in the Mississippi Division, while Cedar Falls and Dubuque Hempstead were second and third, respectively, in the Valley Division. Kennedy is fifth in the Iowa High School Golf Coaches Association ratings. Cedar Falls is eighth and Xavier ranks 10th. Linn-Mar (11th), Waterloo West (14th) and Hempstead (19th) are also top contenders vying for three team berths to state.
Kennedy's Cody Bell, seventh in the individual ratings, Marshalltown's No. 9 Ben Wallom, Hempstead's MVC Valley Athlete of the Year and 10th-rated Carson Hillery and MVC Mississippi Athlete of the year Tyler McCann of Linn-Mar are among the top individuals.
"It's going to be a dogfight," Kennedy Coach Mark Wilden said about both the team and individual field.
Cedar Rapids Prairie, No. 12 Iowa City High and Iowa City West travel to Eldridge for a district at Glynn's Creek Golf Course hosted by North Scott.
