NOT ON PIERS: The Cedar Rapids City Council decided last week not to allow homes to be built on piers anywhere in the city. We still wonder: Couldn't a development of such homes, potentially more affordable than standard homes with basements, be a useful limited option in some targeted, flood-recovery areas? Couldn't city code be revised to ensure these homes' design and quality are not inferior to traditional building styles?

GONE FOREVER: It was sad watching demolition of the Peoples Church across the street from The Gazette building. The 136-year-old stucco-and-brick church structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It proved to be too expensive to move or renovate when the congregation moved to another site. On the plus side, a new office building is planned and that will boost the property tax roles for the city.

FEWER STUDENTS: Total enrollment continues to drop and open-enrollment numbers are an expanding net loss in the Cedar Rapids School District, according to this year's official count. The latter is especially troubling.
