Moore's big game powers Lisbon (Video)

LONE TREE – Lisbon's Trevor Moore is anxious to return to his role as fullback, but he certainly had a memorable game in his stint at halfback.

The 5-foot-10 junior was moved to the featured backfield position when an early injured forced players to shuffle spots. He fit perfectly in his unexpected spot.

Moore rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns, helping top-ranked Lisbon to a 20-7 victory over No. 6 Lone Tree Friday night in a Class A state quarterfinal football battle. The win was Lisbon's first quarterfinal victory in seven quarterfinal appearances dating back to 1987.

Quarterback Ben Knake suffered a leg injury on the opening offensive series and didn't take another snap. Running back Tait Simpson, a quarterback last year, replaced Knake, who was on crutches after the game. Moore then became took Simpson's role.

Did Moore expect to gain nearly half of his season total of 377 yards?

“Not really,” Moore said. “They moved me to halfback. I stepped up and made plays.”

He shined in the third series, rushing three times during Lisbon's four-play, 39-yard scoring. Moore capped the drive with a nifty run up the middle and then cut to the outside for a 24-yard touchdown run with 43 seconds left in the first quarter. He added the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.

“The holes opened up,” Moore said. “It was easy to make reads and make my cuts.”

Moore also knifed through the Lone Tree defense for a 10-yard touchdown run, highlighting a 60-yard drive that burned almost five minutes at the start of the second half. Lisbon led 20-7.

He carried the ball 21 times, running over defenders and carrying some for a ride. He gave Lone tree fits, refusing to drop down.

“He's just behind seniors and had to wait his turn,” Simpson said. “When he gets the ball, he's ready. He runs hard in practice and he's hard to take down, so when he's ready like he was tonight, he's a good runner.”

Simpson was pretty good as well, finishing with 101 rushing yards. He scored on a one-yard run, set up by a 31-yard run off a bootleg on the previous play.

Lisbon dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

“It was the line,” Lisbon Coach Kent Allison said. “The line up from, offensively (and) defensively, that was the difference.”

Moore was one of the first players to credit the line. He said he couldn't thank the offensive line enough and couldn't have put up the stats without their effort.

“The line blocked terrific,” Moore said. “The line and the fullback, they led the way the whole game.”

The Lisbon defense stifled Lone Tree for most of the game. They allowed just 94 total yards. Defense is a source of pride for Lisbon, which gave up less than 1.7 yards per rush.

“We had it set in stone we wanted to be the best,” Simpson said. “Right now, we are the best. We are going to continue it and we're not going to let up on anybody no matter who we've got.”

Lisbon is making its first trip to the state semifinals. Lisbon (12-0) plays Mason City Newman (11-1) at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11. Simpson said the team is excited for the opportunity, and Allison is already happy about what his players have accomplished.

“These kids really have a heart,” Allison said. “Every coach should coach a group of kids like that.

“It's not even a matter of winning. They want to do something and they have a lot of drive. I'm very proud of them.”

Lone Tree (10-2) managed three first downs – all coming on a drive in the second quarter. Lone Tree drove 66 yards on 12 plays. Gabe Lorack scored on a one-yard TD and led Lone Tree with 39 yards rushing. Lorack added 42 yards passing for Lone Tree, connecting on a 34-yard pass to Bryan Forbes, which helped lead to its only score.
