Lira’s chance to contribute

Nov. 10, 2011 8:48 am
IOWA CITY - Tomas Lira has been waiting for his chance, and it appears that opportunity might be this season.
The University of Iowa sophomore is expected to contend for a spot in the lineup at 197 pounds this season. Lira has confidence he will be filling a void left by the graduation of All-American Luke Lofthouse. Vinnie Wagner will also contend for the starting spot.
"This is what I've been looking forward to even since I started here," Lira said. "Just getting the chance to be the guy and get on the mat and score team points and win titles."
Lira, a two-time state finalist for West Liberty, posted a 13-7 record last season, including six falls. He, and Wagner, may also be called on to fill in at 184 while returning All-American Grant Gambrall recovers from a concussion. Lira said it hasn't been an easy process, and that his effort has put him in this position.
"It kind of surprised me how fast it happened. Just how things fell into place just right," Lira said. "I still had to do a heck of a lot of work to get where I am today."
