Ease up on pheasants before they’re gone
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I grew up hunting pheasants and I appreciate the role hunting can play in maintaining healthy wildlife populations. However, the pheasant population in Iowa is no longer healthy.
A combination of unfortunate weather conditions, agricultural practices and environmental changes have taken their toll, but it's hard to feel sorry for those who are now determined to shoot every last pheasant they can find, even as they mourn the passing of the species. I can't help thinking of passenger pigeons.
