Hawkeye Fans From Across the Country Disappointed in Lincoln
Nov. 25, 2011 4:39 pm
Thousands of Hawkeye football fans watched quietly from the Memorial Stadium stands as the Cornhuskers beat Iowa in the first ever “Heroes Game” Friday afternoon. The loss sends Iowa to 7-5, and sent more than six-thousand Hawkeye fans home without bragging rights over their newest “rival.”
“ It was hard to watch, it was disappointing, but hey at least we fought to the end, got a score, and avoided the shutout,” said Dave Boekholder of Dyersville. “We'll still play in a bowl game this year, and I hope these fans come out and support (the Hawkeyes).”
While many fans traveled to Lincoln from Eastern Iowa, Hawkeye fans from across the Country came to see the 20-7 loss.
“The Hawkeyes will never die, and the Huskers will never die, and therefore I see this to be a good rivalry,” said Rob Elliot, who drove in from Colorado to meet his Mom and Dad at the game.
Hawkeye fans “stuck living” in Nebraska also used Friday as an opportunity to wear their black and gold.
“I'm actually going to work (wearing) my Nebraska gear on Monday, just because I talked so much smack that I might get fired if I go in with (Iowa) gear,” said Tiffany Baker, an Iowa fan who apparently owns a fair amount of Nebraska red.
