Tourney wins for ISU, UNI

Chelsea Poppens recorded her third double-double of the season and the duo of Kelsey Harris and Nikki Moody combined to hit nine three-pointers as Iowa State defeated Butler, 64-44, last night at the Nugget Classic in Reno, Nev.
The Cyclones improved to 4-1, and Butler dropped to 1-4.
Poppens equaled her career high with 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Moody finished with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. Harris drilled four 3-pointers to finish with a career-high 12 points. Jessica Schroll had a career-high eight assists.
The Cyclones used an 18-5 run midway through the second half to bust open a tight game. After Butler closed to 39-31, Iowa State made four 3-pointers - three from Harris, one by Moody - to go on top 57-36 with 7:17 remaining.
Butler shot just 34.8 percent in the game and Iowa State held a 41-22 edge on the glass. Butler was led by Haley Howard's 10 points.
Iowa State is off until next Sunday when it plays at Michigan at
1 p.m.
NORTHERN IOWA 90, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 73 - Northern Iowa won the Doubletree Los Angeles Westside Thanksgiving Classic and improved to 4-1.
The Panthers shot 49.2 percent (31 of 63) from the field and 42.3 percent (11 of 26) from beyond the arc. Five Panthers scored in double-digits.
Amber Kirschbaum, voted tournament MVP, scored a career-high 24 points and recorded 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Rachel Madrigal, also named to the all-tournament team, scored 14 points.
Katelin Oney added 15 points, K.K. Armstrong 13 and Brittni Donaldson 11. Armstrong added eight rebounds and five assists to her stat line.
The Panthers out-rebounded the Penguins, 44-26, and 17 offensive rebounds helped UNI to a 25-1 edge in second-chance points.
UNI plays Southeast Missouri State at 7 p.m. Thursday in the McLeod Center at Cedar Falls.
