Here is an example of what we are looking for from high school journalists looking for experience, exposure for their work and promotion of their high schools and teams.
WILLIAMSBURG - The bar has been set high for the Williamsburg boys' basketball team in 2011-12.
With plenty of returning experience and some promising newcomers, Raiders Coach Dave Schlabaugh expects his team to improve on last year's 13-11 overall mark and share of the Wamac West title.
“I am proud of how far we have come as a program,” he said. “We have a group of young men who have put in the time to help the program be successful.”
Schlabaugh, 42-29 in his fourth year at Williamsburg, returns eight letterwinners, including all-Wamac and all-state guard Mick Donohoe.
“Mick is a consistent scorer and leader for us,” Schlabaugh said.
Jackson Petz earned second-team all-conference honors last season and is a two-year letterwinner. Petz averaged 10 points per game as a junior and is a good athlete and defender. Jordan McMenomy was honorable mention all-conference as a sophomore. He is very active and is a solid defender and rebounder.
The Raiders will those tenacious returning letterwinners as their major strength. Schlabaugh mentioned a weakness will be developing a solid rotation with the returning players and newcomers.
“It will be important to develop roles for all the players.” he said.
The Raiders also lost two key seniors from the 2010-2011 team.
“Losing one of our main scorers from last year is tough, but we have plenty of guys willing to step right in,” Schlabaugh said. “I would expect this team to play an up-tempo game with our depth and athleticism. We will press on defense this season more than in previous seasons.”
