Demolition crews begin work on fire-damaged Iowa City business
Jan. 10, 2012 6:25 am
Demolition crews have begun work to demolish a heavily-damaged Iowa City business building.
An excavator and dump truck slowed traffic in front of the fire-damaged Bruegger's Bagels on Monday afternoon. Work to remove what remains of the building and at least one other is expected to continue all week.
In September, an early-morning fire broke out at the bagel shop. It took firefighters hours to contain the blaze, which destroyed the business at 225 Iowa Avenue and the historic Van Patten House on Linn Street.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but officials believe it started in the kitchen area of Bruegger's.
Investigators look around the Brueggers building at 225 Iowa Ave. Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2011 in downtown Iowa City as they try to determine the cause of the fire that destroyed the business and the apartments above it. (Brian Ray/The Gazette)
