JOB HELP: Beginning Feb. 6, local job seekers can take advantage of another public resource. The Cedar Rapids Public Library at Westdale will offer free drop-in job labs on Monday mornings. You can get help with resumes, online job searches and applications and other employment-related subjects.

TAKING FITNESS INTO THEIR OWN HANDS: After flooding in 2008 wiped out a private fitness center in Elkader, some former customers and other residents got together and rescued the facility. They bought and restored the equipment and secured a more secure location to lease. The community once again has a fitness center, a non-profit operation with 80 members.

HEALTHY INITIATIVE: Betty Johnson of Marion is this year's Iowa Commission on the Status of African-Americans' Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award winner. The American Cancer Society nominated Johnson for her work in establishing Body and Soul, an education program housed in neighborhood churches. Its goal is to improve African-Americans' health.
