South East Junior High students win championship at the annual I’ll Make Me A World game show

South East JHS students won first place in the I'll Make Me a World Black History Game show competition on January 27th in Des Moines.
The Annual Conference held at the Convention Center is a celebration of Africa American History, culture and achievement which also host works shops, guest speakers and College Exhibits. I'll make ME A World is the brain Child of Director Betty Andrews who has hosted the annual event for four years. The name was chosen from a Poem by James Weldon “I'll make me a world”. The Iowa State Legislature also recognizes the IMMAW theme song “I'll make me a World in Iowa” by Effie Burt.

row center, Mohammed Shaban far right, Kenya Earl far left, with alternates: Qunisha Woods center row and Rina Bryant not pictured and Coach Mr. Hamza Sharif Omar South East defeated Johnston and Clinton to go on to win the Championship in an 18 minute round quiz show with a ninety second speed round on African-American history. Students were asked questions from six categatories for which they had to study and prepare intensely. Points were given for elaboration on facts for 30 seconds. South East students were able to score several elaboration points beating the Johnston by 145 points to 45. The categories ranged from African American contributions Literature, Music, Dance, Cinema, Art, business to African American contributions and history in Iowa.
