WRESTLING DUALS DUD: The state high school wrestling duals tournament, for years held on the Saturday following the traditional individual state tournament, had a home at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. But with the arena under renovation, state athletic officials moved this year's event to Des Moines. It was conducted Wednesday, a day ahead of the traditional tournament, which was shortened to three days. Not surprisingly, the change wasn't a ringing success. Many of the dual-tournament teams fielded reserves and rested individual state qualifiers, not wanting to risk their physical readiness for the more prestigious traditional tournament. Let's hope the team duals event is returned to the separate time slot it deserves and can be showcased at the improved Cedar Rapids arena.

WEATHER WARNING: As many Iowans appreciate a mild winter (sorry, snowmobilers), a citizen-based environmental advocacy organization is reminding us just how extreme our weather has been in recent years. Environment Iowa reported that every county in Iowa sustained a weather-related event that rated a federal disaster declaration sometime between 2006 and 2011. The group predicts more is to come. State climatologist Harry Hillaker isn't so sure.
