CLASS 4A SEMIFINALS
IOWA CITY WEST (24-0) vs. LINN-MAR (20-4)When: 3:15 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
Scouting Report: Rematch from last year's state tourney semifinals. Linn-Mar won that game en route to winning the 4A title. West won the lone regular-season matchup this season, 75-63, at Linn-Mar in early December. West was very impressive in its 74-52 dismantling of Waukee in Wednesday night's quarterfinals. Five Trojans scored in double figures, led by Jeremy Morgan's 15 points. Linn-Mar, meanwhile, trailed its entire quarterfinal against Dubuque Senior until rallying late for a 51-50 victory on an Andy Henry layup with five seconds left. West's size and athleticism will test Linn-Mar inside. A key for the Lions will be to find another player to complement super guard Marcus Paige. That has been an issue all season.
CLASS 2A CHAMPIONSHIP
MOUNT VERNON (22-4) vs. FORT DODGE ST. EDMOND (20-6)
When: 8:05 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
Scouting Report: It's hard to find anything to nitpick about in Mount Vernon's first two state tournament games. The fourth-seeded Mustangs beat back North Cedar in the quarterfinals, 56-39, and were equally impressive (if not more so) in a 66-49 semifinal win over top-seeded MFL/Mar-Mac. Mount Vernon has relied all season on its talented senior trio of guards Jake Timm, Jack Keleher and Micah Russell. Russell had 20 points against North Cedar, Timm 27 and Keleher 16 against MFL/Mar-Mac. We'll see how much seventh-seeded St. Edmond has left in its tank considering it had to go to overtime to beat Clarinda in Thursday's semifinals, 56-44. The Gaels beat Prairie City-Monroe in the quarterfinals, 53-52. Three players have scored the vast majority of St. Edmond's points: senior guards Nick Clark (21.0 ppg) and Neil Flattery (13.3 ppg) and junior guard David Flattery (11.8 ppg).
