CLASS 3A CHAMPIONSHIPWESTERN DUBUQUE (24-2) vs. MOUNT PLEASANT (25-1) When: 6:05 p.m. Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines Scouting Report: Two teams that have been mighty impressive thus far at the state tournament. WD beat Davenport Assumption in the quarterfinals, 58-46, and ended Sioux City Heelan's run of titles in the semifinals, 58-43. Guard T.J. Lake has had a terrific first two games, with 41 combined points. Point guard Logan Pitz is probably the most important member of the Bobcats and who wins the battle between he and Mount Pleasant's Jordan Ashton could determine the winner here. Mount Pleasant smoked Grinnell in the semifinals, 53-33, after blowing out Adel ADM in the quarterfinals, 62-32. The Panthers - coached by former Maquoketa Valley prep Paul Rundquist - have significant interior size in 6-foot-7 towers Blake Vandenburg and Nick Lyon. Will WD be able to cope with them? Western Dubuque last won a state title in 2001. Mount Pleasant has never won a state basketball championship.CLASS 4A CHAMPIONSHIPIOWA CITY WEST (25-0) vs. SIOUX CITY EAST (21-3) When: 8:05 p.m. Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines Scouting Report: How will West deal with East's Adam Woodbury? That's the biggest question in this one. Woodbury is the 7-foot-1 senior, of course, headed to Iowa. West plays man-to-man defense almost exclusively but obviously cannot against Woodbury. The Trojans pulled away late in their 4A semifinal against Linn-Mar, 71-51, and pounded Waukee in the quarterfinals, 74-52. Contrarily, West point guard Dondre Alexander will be a handful for East to handle defensively. He had 27 points against Linn-Mar and is an athletic and strong player who likes to penetrate the lane. East upset top-ranked and top-seeded Ankeny in the semifinals in double overtime, after surviving West Des Moines Valley in the quarters, 66-60. The Black Raiders have had players other than Woodbury step up here. Senior J.C. Fuller is a 6-foot-3 guard who actually leads East in scoring.
