Polk has treated guest presenter very well
The Gazette Opinion Staff

It has been my pleasure in the past several years to participate in program presentations at several of Cedar Rapids' schools. One of the schools is Polk Elementary, and I have been there several times. My “expertise” and interest is in presenting quilting, the history and “how to” to the students when they are studying an appropriate topic. It has been my experience when I'm invited to Polk that the staff has well prepared the students on the topic but also on how to receive “guests.” I have been met at the door by “helper” students watching for my arrival and ready to help carry my heavy bundle of quilts to the room.
The students have been polite, respectful, asked very appropriate questions and showed interest. This has not been true in all my classroom experience. How refreshing it is then to be surrounded by students who have had coaching on how to behave when someone takes time to be a presenter.
When my presentation there is over, the students help carry my bundles to my car and thank me again.
Polk (among the proposed school closings) gets high marks from me for their “teaching beyond the basics.”
