UNI needs center for its LGBT students

LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students at the University of Northern Iowa need support from the institutional/administrative level. We cannot continue to rely on students from a student group to fully support a student population. The only support for LGBT students currently is UNI Proud.
UNI needs a center for student support, campus/community education and resources. The space would serve the need for LGBT students to meet, study, reflect and organize on campus. It is time for UNI to make a commitment to LGBT students, showing visible and permanent support systems that will augment their academic and personal success.
This is different from a space for student organizations; this is a student population, one not currently served by the university. If Diversity Matters is going to be an initiative, then it needs to include all diverse populations. LGBT students are not visibly served or celebrated in the Diversity Matters initiative. LGBT students need a student center.
Students should not have to be homeless because their roommate is uncomfortable with their sexuality. Students should not have to dread going to class because their professor can't be bothered to use their preferred name/pronoun. Students should not be the only support for students who are disowned by their friends and families at a crucial transition in their life.
