Other cities preserve history, why not C.R.?

I was born and raised in Cedar Rapids. Nine years ago, I returned after living in several large cities for 30 years.
I'm amazed at how little of the historical architecture remains in this city. Significant pieces of our history have vanished. And now the beautiful, historic First Christian Church - scheduled to be demolished for the sake of a medical facility's “need” for 40 parking spaces. Are you kidding?
In the cities I've lived in - Atlanta, Baltimore and Phoenix - there's a pride for their architectural history. Historical buildings of significance are “re-purposed.” Those cities are multicultural and run by people from all walks of life.
It seems Cedar Rapids is still run by small, select groups that overshadow the rest of the community. They have the power to influence city councils, get millions in tax breaks, close streets that have been here for 100 years and annihilate significant pieces of our history, all in the name of “progress.” I have a better word: greed.
