OLYMPIC-SIZE TURNOUT: Ticket sales for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Trials held this weekend were expected to set records for single-session and total attendance. No surprise. The event was held in Iowa City, home of the University of Iowa's famed collegiate program, in a state that takes a back seat to none when it comes to fan interest and support of high school and college wrestling.

MORE WARNING: Johnson County, as Linn County did not long ago, is activating its outdoor warning sirens when a storm capable of 70-mph winds and/or golf-ball-sized hail approaches. That kind of storm can inflict as much damage and danger as some tornadoes, for which the warning system previously was reserved.

COLONY BUILDING: Jim Hayes, owner of an Iowa City house where famed Iowa artist Grant Wood once lived, is collaborating with the University of Iowa to establish the home as the centerpiece of a working artists' colony. The plan is reminiscent of the short-lived Stone City colony that Wood helped found back in the 1930s, but the UI's support makes it more likely to endure.
