The Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce annual Buy Here Business Fair is going green.
Exhibitors will showcase sustainability efforts in energy and climate, our built environment, food, recycling and waste reduction, water, transportation and lifestyle and health.
The complimentary event is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at hotelVetro, 201 S. Linn Street, Iowa City. The community is encouraged to attend to explore local goods and services and to gain ideas on becoming more green.
“The procurement of local goods and services directly impacts the environment by preserving natural resources. Shipping is minimized which in turn reduces carbon emissions,” said Nancy Quellhorst, president & CEO of the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Examples include University of Iowa's biorenewable fuel in campus power plants, ACT's segway and other innovative sustainability projects, and New Pioneer Co-op's composting efforts and incorporation of them into ICCSD.
In addition to highlighting its LEED certified buildings, the City of Iowa City will share information about its stormwater program in which it matches funds for rain gardens, rain barrels, permeable concrete and pavers. Two hybrid vehicles, a Toyota Prius and Chevy Volt, will be displayed on the pedestrian mall during the fair.
The Chamber's Buy Here initiative encourages businesses in Johnson County to strengthen the local economy through business-to-business purchasing. The Fair is an opportunity to learn about ways to shift non-local spending on goods and services into Johnson County.
“Shifting out of area procurements to Johnson County fosters a better business environment,” said Quellhorst.
The Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, on behalf of more than 1,000 members, actively fosters a better business environment through Advocacy, Connections & Education.
