A new “locavore” index ranks Iowa second in the nation in numbers of farmers markets and CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture programs) per person.
Vermont came in first and Florida scored last in the rankings, based on U.S. government agricultural and population data.
According to the index, Iowa, with a population of more than 3 million, has 237 farmers markets and 487 CSAs, for a score of 24.07 per 100,000 people.
Vermont has fewer markets – 99 – and CSAs, 164, but with a population of 621,760, scored 42.30 per 100,000.
Although it's a primary citrus source for much of the country, Florida's population of 18.5 million, coupled with just 146 farmers markets and 193 CSAs gave the state a score of 1.83 per 100,000 people.
