BACK IT UP: Promises are one thing. Making good on them is another. An IowaWatch report found that Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans wanting to access the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, which promises to pay for college education costs, often see the money arrive several weeks or months later than expected. They deserve better.

EMS PROBLEMS: Emergency medical services are critical to Iowans. Troubling, though, was a Des Moines Register investigation that found several weaknesses in Iowa's EMS system, including: criminal background checks of personnel aren't required, EMT volunteers are critically short in many communities, more than 450 providers have been disciplined in the past seven years, and up to half of providers have not reported patient-care data to the oversight agency, Iowa Bureau of EMS, which has seen major staff cuts and has never imposed penalties for serious problems found by inspectors.

HACKED: Hackers accessed the personal records of more than 125,000 people who applied for classes during an eight-year period at Kirkwood Community College. The college is working to improve online security.
