Landfill fire is disaster in the making
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jun. 10, 2012 1:36 pm
As I watch and smell black plumes of smoke representing hundreds of thousands of pounds of shredded tires (and who knows what else) enter the atmosphere and settle on Iowa City, its people, animals, its crops, land and the entire region, a potential disaster is in the making.
The implication of the pollution this fire wreaks now and for years to come is potentially profound and yet, little is being done or said. Except for a few stories in the newspapers, most of us are in the dark on one of the most serious issues we have had in this community for years. I wonder why there is such silence on this issue.
