DEATH RATE DOWN: The breast cancer death rate in Iowa declined 40 percent from 1992 to 2010, according to the Cancer in Iowa report from the University of Iowa College of Public Health. Doctors credit better screening and treatment improvements. That's encouraging. Breast cancer is the second-leading type of cancer death among Iowa women. We also hope the lower rate is partially due to more public awareness of lifestyle factors such as obesity.

SAFE ON CAMPUS: Only 1 percent of University of Iowa students participating in a scientific survey say they don't feel safe on campus. The survey project, by a UI journalism class and reported by Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism-Iowa Watch.org, provides valuable context as UI officials strive for the best balance of safety and freedom.

TROOPER HONORED: Iowa State Trooper Mark Domino is one of 10 law enforcement officers nationwide getting a TOP COPS Award by the National Association of Police Organizations. Despite being wounded while chasing suspects in an armed robbery of a Maynard bank on Oct. 30, Domino continued pursuit.
