Ultimatum could get political parties to act

It is time that our elected leaders start thinking about what is best for our country rather than in getting re-elected. Let's choose an arbitrary amount of money, $1 million, for example, and an arbitrary time period, perhaps six months.
The Democrats have that much time to choose which entitlements to cut to come up with a million dollars and the Republicans have that same amount of time to decide who or what to tax to come up with the same amount of money. If neither side can agree, the Democrats decide on the taxes and the Republicans choose the entitlements. I bet something would get done quickly if this plan went into effect.
