CEDAR RAPIDS – It was a surreal scene.Just moments after his Cedar Valley Christian team had lost a 72-0 decision to Valley Community, Ed Bettsworth called for a huddle at midfield. Now this wasn't any normal huddle. Yes it included the players, but Bettsworth called for the fans to join him and his players. And the fans, young and old alike ventured on to the playing field at LaSalle Middle School after the first home game in the Huskies' two-year history.“Rome wasn't built in a day,” he said to the crowd gathered around him. “We have made progress and we will continue to make progress. These young men will continue to need your support."Bettsworth then called on the supporters to offer words of encouragement and several did.If support has anything to do with it, CVC will eventually succeed. The Huskies (0-2)were behind 58-0 at the half, but as the team ran off the field, they received a standing ovation.“Our kids play as hard as they can, considering their inexperience,” Bettsworth said. “You know, they don't give up and they're never going to quit no matter how many times they take it on the chin.“They knew the score coming in,” he added. “They keep going out there and giving their all and I am proud of them for that.”Valley (1-1) took control right from the start, scoring a whopping 56 points in the first 12 minutes. The Tiger starters were out of the game early as the eight-man contest went to a continuous clock in the second quarter. That did nothing to dampen the spirit of the large group of CVC supporters. They continued to cheer their team and the players' effort never waned.“This school is an extension of Cedar Valley Bible Church,” Bettsworth said. “A lot of people bring their kids here for a Christian education. That's the thing about a school like ours. We are a tight-knit group and these people are going to come and support these kids because they love them and care about them.”Bettsworth and the fans were thankful for the opportunity to have a home schedule this year. He was appreciative that the LaSalle field was made available to the program.“Those people are Christian too,” he said in reference to those at St. Jude's and LaSalle that allowed the Huskies to use the facility. “They have gone out of their way to make us feel at home and we appreciate it.”
