Social Security earned, no benefit

Can someone explain to me why our Social Security payments are now considered “federal benefit payments?” This income we are getting was earned. We contributed to Social Security while we were working, as did our employers.
The folks in Washington pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madoff. They took Social Security money and used it, but in the process they “forgot” that is was our money.
Now they have the irony to tell us that the Social Security money won't last and it's our fault. Then to top it off, they started calling it a “benefit” as if we did not earn any of it, as if we are part of the “entitlement group.” The government gets worse all the time. Is there anyone left who cares about the retired folks who paid their share?
