Wakefield win away from return to finals

DES MOINES - Kegan Wakefield is a win away from returning to the state finals.The Iowa City West senior beat Waterloo West's Jacob Showalter, 12-2, in a quarterfinal match of the Iowa High School Athletic Association Class 3A state wrestling tournament Friday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.Wakefield, a two-time state medalist, was a runner-up as a sophomore and placed seventh last year. He will try to avenge a loss to second-ranked Jacob Woodard of Bettendorf in the semifinals.He was joined in the semifinals by teammates Chris Walters (126) and 195-Mickey Pelfrey. Walters and Pelfrey have big challenges in the semifinals. Walters faces top-ranked Fredy Stroker of Bettendorf, and Pelfrey has top-ranked Marcus Harrington of Waterloo West.They were the only Iowa City wrestlers to reach the semifinals. Iowa City High's third-ranked 220-pounder Ryan Maas beat Western Dubuque's Brennan Koerperich, 3-1, in the quarterfinals. He will face Dubuque Hempstead's 10th-ranked Gannon Gremmel.Iowa City Regina's Daniel Gaffey remained unbeaten through the Class 1A quarterfinals earlier Friday. He pinned Southwest Iowa's Mark Hall in 5:26. Gaffey faces Maquoketa Valley's Ryan Parmely, who overcame a deficit and pinned top-ranked Vinnie Harvey of Fort Dodge St. Edmond.
