Tough times for top-ranked wrestlers

DES MOINES - It was tough being a top-ranked wrestler.Ten competitors ranked No. 1 failed to reach Friday's semifinals of the Iowa High School Athletic Association state wrestling tournament at Wells Fargo Arena.The most came in Class 1A where four top-ranked wrestlers fell in the first two rounds of the 16-person field. Tri-County/Montezuma's Tyler Foubert (160), Alburnett's Conner Shulista (132) and Fort Dodge St. Edmond's Vinnie and Teddie Harvey at 220 and 145, respectively, lost early.In Class 2A, Davenport Assumption's Nick Georgean (152), 170-pounder Erik Lux of South Tama and Winterset's Mason Miller (113) lost in the first round. Georgean and Lux were unbeaten defending state champions.Linn-Mar was on both ends of the spectrum Friday. State champion and fourth-ranked Matt Wempen beat Fort Madison's top-ranked Bryce Meyer, 3-0, at 113 in 3A. Indianola's Matt Victor returned the favor, topping Lions No. 1 145-pounder Joel Northrup."It's a competitive tournament," Linn-Mar coach Doug Streicher said. "You have to be ready."
