Tuesday's games at the boys' state basketball tournament:
CLASS 3A QUARTERFINAL
No. 1 Vinton-Shellsburg (24-0) vs. Harlan (18-6)
Time: 3:45 p.m.
Tournament history: Vinton-Shellsburg has qualified for the second time (1996 the other). Vinton was at state tourney three times, the last in 1986. Harlan is a grizzled state tournament veteran making its 17th appearance. The Cyclones won titles in 2004 and 2006.
Coaches: Joe Johnson of V-S 124-124 in a career that also includes a stop at Janesville. Harlan's Mitch Osborn has directed 17 teams to state at Harlan, Pomeroy-Palmer and Elk Horn-Kimballton, the most of any coach since the IHSAA took control of the tournament in 1923.
Synopsis: Vinton-Shellsburg has had a dream season, sweeping the Wamac Conference's West Division en route to the first unbeaten season at the school since 1971. The starting lineup consists of three-year standout Grant Sagan (19.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per game), a 1,000-point career scorer. Max Griffith (13.4 ppg) and Maxton Kearns (10.7 ppg) joined Sagan and Kelyn Rickels (9.2 ppg) on the all-Wamac first team. Harlan is a bit of an upstart, meanwhile, finishing fourth in the Hawkeye Ten Conference but shocking conference rival Atlantic in the substate final after losing twice to it in the regular season. Six-foot-6 forward Trey Lansman leads the team in scoring (16.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.6) Four of Harlan's starters are juniors.
Prediction: Harlan by 1.
