Mar. 5, 2013 12:12 pm
Wednesday's games at the boys' state basketball tournament:
CLASS 4A QUARTERFINAL
No. 1 Iowa City West (23-0) vs. West Des Moines Dowling (18-5)
Time: 8:15 p.m.
Tournament history: It's the 13th appearance at state for West, its third in a row. It has four championships: in 1977, 1998, 2000 and last season. Dowling also is "The Show" for the 13th time, with championships in 1957 and 1979.
Coaches: Steve Bergman is one of the most successful coaches in the state, carrying a 449-172 record in 27 seasons, including three at Monticello and one at West Liberty. He has three state championships. Mike O'Connor of Dowling is 95-66 in seven seasons.
Synopsis: West, ranked 12th in the nation by USA Today, seeks back-to-back undefeated seasons, taking a 49-game win streak into this one. The Trojans have been unfazed after losing guard Dondre Alexander (a Southern Mississippi signee) to a suspension late in the regular season. Northern Iowa recruits Wyatt Lohaus (13.1 ppg) and Jeremy Morgan (11.7 ppg) lead this team, though there are plenty of good complementary parts such as center Myzeah Batie-Gaddy (9.7 ppg) and guard Austin Swank (9.3 ppg). Dowling has five players averaging between 8.2 and 10.7 points per game. The 10.7 belongs to center Jon Wisnieski, an Iowa football recruit. Dowling was runner-up to West Des Moines Valley in the CIML Western Division.
Prediction: West by 15.
