Affordable Care Act protects families
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jun. 3, 2013 12:34 pm
Recently, The Gazette has done articles about the Affordable Care Act. Always under a picture of President Barack Obama, always complaining that people don't understand the law and that many are opposed to it.
While doing a fair job of reporting the political racket going on about this law, you fail to make any attempt to talk about the facts of who and what is covered by it as well as ignoring the history of its creation.
For my family, the two kids who had the misfortune to graduate from college in this recession were able to stay on our policy until age 26 and starting next year their health insurance will not be completely tied to where they can find work. My wife will be offered health insurance by her employer for the first time in more than 20 years and cannot be rejected for pre-existing conditions. This is a big deal.
Thank you to Sen. Tom Harkin and Reps. Bruce Braley and Dave Loebsack for working hard with Obama to give us a version of what every other wealthy country in the world enjoys, universal health care. A very special raspberry to Sen. Chuck Grassley and Rep. Steve King for their unsportsmanlike conduct in opposition even after the law was passed. Gov. Terry Branstad also earned a super-duper Bronx cheer for failing to comply with the law in a timely manner.
