A dozen key area football games for Week 2: IOWA CITY REGINA at SOLON
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Solon
TV: KCRG 9.2
Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0. Regina is ranked No. 1 in Class 1A.
Notable: It happened at this stage of the 2010 season -- Regina snapped Solon's 42-game winning streak. Now, it's the Regals with the long string, 43 victories in a row. That ranks sixth-longest all-time in Iowa. The Regals began their quest for a fourth straight state championship last week with a 42-14 triumph over West Liberty. Drew Cook completed 16 of 21 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Solon was extremely impressive in its opener, a 31-8 win against Mount Vernon. The Spartans scored 20 points in the second quarter. Jacob Black, who moved into the district from Monticello, ran for two touchdowns and passed for another.
CEDAR RAPIDS KENNEDY at CEDAR RAPIDS PRAIRIE
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at John Wall Field
Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0. Prairie is ranked No. 10 in Class 4A.
Notable: For the first time since 2008, Kennedy is 1-0. The Cougars rallied from an early 10-point deficit to battle past Cedar Rapids Washington, 14-10, last week, and take aim at another Metro foe. It took some time, but Prairie finally wore down Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 24-7, limiting the J-Hawks to 180 yards of offense. Mitch Christensen ran for 125 yards, including a 44-yard TD early in the fourth quarter that gave the Hawks some breathing room. Miles Moa ran for 114 yards for Kennedy in Week 1, but the Cougars relied mostly on a stellar defensive effort.
MARION at DECORAH
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Decorah
Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0. Decorah is ranked No. 4 in Class 3A.
Notable: After handling Mount Pleasant, 40-0, in its season-opener, the challenge is much steeper this week for Marion. Decorah is the defending 3A state champion and carries a 15-game win streak. No. 15 wasn't so easy, though: Waverly-Shell Rock played Decorah to the wire before the Vikings prevailed, 17-14, in a lightning-delayed contest. Holt Johansen ran for 109 yards. Marion breezed behind Colton Mowry (162 yards, two touchdowns) and Quinn Cannoy (four catches, 103 yards, 1 TD). The victory was Tony Perkins' 100th at Marion, and he is five wins away from becoming the school's all-time leader in wins.
CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON at CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Saints Field
Records and rankings: Jefferson is 0-1; Class 4A No. 1 Xavier is 1-0.
Notable: Judging by an opening-week victory (35-7 over Dubuque Hempstead), Xavier's quarterback transition will be a smooth one. Quinton Scholer completed 8 of 10 passes for 100 yards, passing for two touchdowns and running for two more. The Saints jumped to a 35-0 halftime lead, and cruised from there. Jefferson was extremely competitive with Cedar Rapids Prairie for a half, and was within a touchdown until the final 10 minutes of a 24-7 defeat. Layne Sullivan passed for 77 yards and ran for 50.
IOWA CITY WEST at CEDAR RAPIDS WASHINGTON
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium
Records and rankings: Class 4A No. 3 West is 1-0; Washington is 0-1.
Notable: It looks as if West will be an explosive outfit again. The Trojans accumulated more than 600 yards of total offense and blasted Linn-Mar, 67-28, in their opener. Working with a new set of receivers, Nate Boland completed 13 of 18 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns. Washington dropped a 14-10 decision to Cedar Rapids Kennedy in its opener, which also served as Paul James' second debut. Reid Snitker passed for 100 yards, and Connor Vincent collected 10 tackles.
IOWA CITY HIGH at WATERLOO WEST
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Waterloo
Records and rankings: City High is 0-1; West is 1-0. Both teams are unranked.
Notable: West pulled the biggest surprise of the MVC in Week 1, toppling highly regarded Dubuque Senior, 13-7. The Wahawks did it on the ground, getting 166 yards from Alex Young and 141 more from Lance Dunn. Both scored a touchdown, and the Wahawks shut out the Rams for much of the game. City High led Cedar Falls until late in a 14-13 loss. The Little Hawks got 106 rushing yards from Xavier Washpun. Ivan Diaz collected 14 tackles.
DUBUQUE SENIOR at LINN-MAR
Time and site: 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Linn-Mar Stadium
Records and rankings: Both teams are 0-1 and unranked.
Notable: Linn-Mar tries to regroup after allowing 67 points and more than 600 yards of offense in a defeat to Iowa City West. Quarterback Ryan Schmidt did throw for 239 yards, but surrendered three interceptions. The Lions won't be facing as explosive an opponent this week; Senior had difficulty getting much going offensively in a 13-7 upset loss to Waterloo West. The Rams managed just 250 yards of offense, including just 2.6 yards per carry rushing.
APLINGTON-PARKERSBURG at UNION
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at LaPorte City
Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0. A-P is ranked No. 6 in Class 1A; Union is No. 7 in 2A.
Notable: A week after avenging last year's loss to Center Point-Urbana, Union tangles with a traditional powerhouse. The Knights possess one of the state's most dynamic playmakers in quarterback Jay Scheel, a University of Iowa recruit. Scheel rushed for four touchdowns and passed for 163 yards in a 26-16 win over CPU. A-P throttled North Tama, 51-13, behind 383 rushing yards (10.3 yards per carry). Alex Johnson netted 133 yards and three touchdowns.
PELLA at WASHINGTON (Iowa)
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Washington
Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0. Pella is ranked No. 7 in Class 3A; Washington is No. 9.
Notable: Washington opened with an impressive 35-14 win over Mid-Prairie, a strong 2A team. Pella, meanwhile, faced a 4A foe (Marshalltown), and cruised to a 38-13 victory. Trevor Argo passed for 133 yards and a touchdown, and Noah Clayberg ran for 99 yards and a score.
WEST DELAWARE at DYERSVILLE BECKMAN
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Dyersville
Records and rankings: West Delaware is 0-1; Beckman is 1-0 and rated No. 3 in Class 2A.
Notable: Beckman already one win over a Class 3A program under its belt after handling Western Dubuque, 41-19, last week. The Blazers go after another "big school" Friday before settling into district play. A potentially prolific air team, Beckman exhibited a steady ground attack instead against Western Dubuque; Mitch Steger rushed for 216 yards and two touchdowns. West Delaware absorbed a 37-27 loss to DeWitt Central in Week 1 despite 164 rushing yards by sophomore Coy Roussell.
LISBON at ALBURNETT
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Alburnett
Records and rankings: Lisbon is 0-1 and ranked No. 6 in Class A; Alburnett is 1-0.
Notable: Alburnett looks to go to 2-0 against Linn County Class A teams, but Lisbon will be a substantial step up in competition. Alburnett handled North Linn, 39-6, last week behind a 182-yard, three-touchdown performance by quarterback Alec Philipp. Lisbon looks to rebound after taking a 28-20 hit against West Branch. Still, the Lions figure to be one of the best Class A schools in the area. Tyler Svatosch rushed for 81 yards and intercepted a pass last week.
MAQUOKETA VALLEY at MONTICELLO
Time and site: 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Monticello
Records and rankings: Both teams are 1-0 and unranked.
Notable: Monticello retained The Cowbell with a convincing win over Anamosa last week, but this figures to be more of a challenge. Maquoketa Valley is a 1A-5 co-favorite (with Clayton Ridge) and opened with a hard-fought 28-14 win over Starmont. Monticello had two rushers with more than 100 yards against Anamosa in Tanner Felton and Cody Jamison.
Cedar Rapids Prairie's Connor Grade (10), Trey Beckman (2) and Jesse Vizzini (6) celebrate Beckman's 63-yard touchdown run against Cedar Rapids Jefferson last week. The Hawks host Cedar Rapids Kennedy in a battle of 1-0 teams Friday. (Liz Martin/The Gazette-KCRG)
