Kuemper regains No. 1 in 2A

Carroll Kuemper ends the 2013 football regular season the same way it began.

On top of the Class 2A rankings of The Gazette's football poll. But the Knights took a circuitous route to get there.

Kuemper (9-0) regained the No. 1 slot Monday after former top team Waukon was beaten 19-14 Friday by New Hampton. The Knights started the season on top of the 2A rankings, then were replaced by Waukon.

New Hampton moved up four spots, to a share of the No. 2 ranking. Waukon slipped to fourth.

In the other notable change, the final poll reflects a split decision for the No. 1 spot in Class A between incumbent BGM and West Lyon. Both received two No. 1 votes and two No. 2 votes for 38 points apiece.

West Des Moines Dowling (Class 4A), Sioux City Heelan (3A), Kuemper (2A), Iowa City Regina (1A) and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton (8-Man) were unanimous No. 1s.

Heelan, Regina, BGM and Exira-EHK were No. 1 from wire to wire.

Regina takes a 51-game winning streak into its first-round playoff game against Tipton (4-5). If the Regals win their fourth straight state championship, they also will break the state record for conseutive victories (55, set by Waterloo East).
