Each week, Hoopla and the Iowa Cultural Corridor Alliance team up to showcase arts and culture events in Eastern Iowa. Below are the hidden gems:The University of Iowa Museum of Art invites you to come celebrate The Woven Life at the UIMA First Friday reception on November 1, 5:00-7:00pm at hotelVetro! For $5, enjoy drink specials, light hors d'oeuvres from Formosa, the ambient psychedelics of The Main Sequence and Jan Friedman's woven fiber art. Using a variety of materials, such as silk, wool, and rayon chenille, Friedman creates tapestries, collages, and scarves. Additionally, she employs hand-dying techniques in order to achieve a painterly control of color. References to the natural world can be found throughout the body of her work and serves as a reference point for the viewer, eliciting a poignant response about content and craft. Friedman has been weaving since 1974 and in 1980 received her MA in Textile Design from the University of Iowa. UIMA First Fridays provide an ideal chance to usher in your weekend and mingle with other art-enthusiasts for a great cause.

Johnson (South Amana), will make its world premiere at the Iowa Theatre Artists Company (ITAC) in Amana on Friday, November 1. The production will run through November 24, leading into the holiday offerings at ITAC, which include two Christmas Concerts and a Christmas Cabaret scheduled for the end of November and into December. The story centers around a reclusive, out-of-work auto mechanic who rediscovers his own worth and purpose when he comes to the aid of a young student who hopes to take 'a trip of a lifetime.' With the challenges of a bothersome neighbor and a less-than-honest businessman in the mix, and the barrier of age discrimination to overcome, the 'Old Guy' must discover what only he can do to help his young friend realize his dream while in the process, creating a dream of his own. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:30 pm. Reservations are strongly encouraged in the intimate seating of the 99-seat theatre. Ticket prices are $22.50 for Adults and $10 for Students. Information about ITAC and its production of 'The Old Guy' can be found at www.iowatheatreartists.org.
