Kidney ailment sidelines Jacobus

CEDAR RAPIDS -- Four-sport athlete Derek Jacobus is expected back in action for the Kennedy High School boys basketball team after the holiday break.Jacobus, a senior, was treated for kidney illness Tuesday and underwent a biopsy, according to his father Eric Jacobus.Derek Jacobus is not allowed physical contact for 2 weeks, retroactive from Tuesday.His father said the ailment is not related to a hit Derek took late in the football season, and that the condition should be treatable with medication.Derek Jacobus quarterbacked the Cougars to an 8-4 record and a spot in the Class 4A quarterfinals.He also participates in basketball, track and baseball.The reigning 4A state long jump champion, Jacobus has committed to the University of Northern Iowa to compete in track and field.Kennedy has five games from now to the break, beginning tonight at home against Waterloo West.
