By Kayla Schueller, Dubuque Wahlert seniorDUBUQUE - It's been said we don't realize the most important moments of our lives until they're gone. For three Dubuque Wahlert wrestlers, this was never a problem.Tristan Birt (106 pounds), Weslee Haynes (170) and Riley Hasken (182) have been preparing for months, hopes of qualifying for this year's state wrestling tournament, which starts today.“I started preparing already last summer," Birt said. "I went to JROB (a 28 day camp) and some other programs.”From the minute they began practicing, all the way until last Saturday when they qualified, they have known this year was going to be special. For Haynes, this will be his second time at the big tournament. But this time will be different.“I just try not to think about it too much," he said. "I've been preparing and, at this point, whatever happens, happens.”Regardless if this is their first or second time qualifying, they could not be more excited.“I think I'll be fine, as long as I keep my head down," Hasken said. "Coach told us ‘not to look up at the crowd and just walk in ready to go.' I'm just excited to get there."As far as advice goes, Wahlert's new wrestling coach Joel Allen has been preparing his wrestlers all season.“After seeing these boys, I'm really excited about where the program is headed," Allen said. " As a team, we won more duals than ever before, and we got three individuals to state."I'm really excited to see these guys do some damage this weekend in Des Moines.”When it comes time to wrestle, the Eagles know each moment could possibly be there last. Therefore, each moment is one they will remember.
