JESUP (21-3) vs. DUNKERTON (24-1)
What: Class 1A substate final
Where: Independence
When: 7 p.m.
Scouting Report: Dunkerton comes in ranked eighth by The Gazette/Iowa Prep Sports, Jesup is unranked. Dunkerton is led by 6-foot-11 senior center Kory Kuenstling, a Drake signee who averages 20.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. He shoots 67 percent from the field. Guards Trevor Jacobsen (13 ppg) and Jordan Kubitz (10.8) are the team's primary 3-point shooters. Dunkerton's only loss was to Meskwaki Settlement School. It has been to state three times and won two championships (in 1933 and 2004). Jesup has not been to the state tournament since 1999. Senior guard Trevor Larson leads the J-Hawks in scoring (16.7 points per game). Kyle Schulz, a 6-5 sophomore, averages 12.9 points. Jesup has played 11 games decided by seven points or less and is 9-2 in those games.
CEDAR RAPIDS XAVIER (15-8) vs. DUBUQUE WAHLERT (19-4)
What: Class 3A substate final
Where: Epworth
When: 7 p.m.
Scouting Report: The teams played in the regular season, with Wahlert winning at home, 69-60. Juniors Adam McDermott and Calvin Winker combined for 48 of those 60 points for Xavier, and they are the Saints' leading scorers this season (16.3 and 12.7). Wahlert's four losses have come to Class 4A teams, all of whom are in substate finals. That includes two to No. 1 Dubuque Senior, one in overtime. The Golden Eagles' top player is 6-foot-7 sophomore Cordell Pemsl, who already has a college offer from Creighton and is being recruited by Big Ten Conference schools. He averages 16.1 points and 9.5 rebounds. Junior guard Josh Carter, a transfer from Dubuque Hempstead, averages 16.0 points. Xavier has not been to state since 2006, when it qualified for the third straight year.
BENTON COMMUNITY (19-4) vs. DEWITT CENTRAL (20-3)
What: Class 3A substate final
Where: Cedar Rapids Kennedy
When: 7 p.m.
Scouting Report: BC and DC played way back in the second game of the regular season, with DeWitt winning, 54-52, at home. Benton has won 10 of its last 11 games, though it needed a rally to win its district opener in overtime against Clear Creek-Amana. The Bobcats' top player is senior guard Nate Woeste, who averages 15.6 points per game. BC has played 14 games decided by eight points or less, going 12-2 in those games. Guard Kyle Bauer leads DeWitt in scoring (15.3 average). The Sabers have won 11 of their last 12 games. Benton Community last made the state tournament in 2009, with the Bobcats' other appearances in 2004 and 1980. DeWitt Central was a 2007 state tourney qualifier, with other appearances in 1996 and 1981 (first place).
