NORTH CEDAR (21-4) vs. TREYNOR (23-1)
What: Class 2A Quarterfinal
When: 12:15 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
Scouting Report: This is the fourth year in a row North Cedar is in the state tournament. The Knights finished fourth in 2011, but dropped quarterfinal games in 2012 and 2013. Treynor is in "The Dance" for the 13th time, the first since 2011 ... North Cedar's top player is the only junior in the starting lineup. Forward Jayden Johnson, 6-foot-4, averages 17.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Senior Jacob Hay is NC's other double-figure scorer (13.1 ppg). North Cedar's losses were to fellow 2A qualifier Cascade (second), Mount Vernon and Iowa City Regina. The loss to Mount Vernon was avenged in the substate finals ... Treynor is a team that relies heavily on inside play. Jacob Flathers (6-6), Nick Paulsen (6-3) and Trey Robinson (6-5) are the team's leading scorers and rebounders, in that order. The Cardinals' have a young backfourt in freshman Trey castle and sophomore Nolan Chapman. Treynor's lone loss was to Irwin-Kirkman-Manilla, 63-57, in early December.
Coach's Comment: "Treynor is tall and long. Our thought is to win the first one and then worry about the next one. I hope the experience factor does play a factor. We know what it's about. It's been a great ride. We've got great kids, very dedicated assistant coaches and a lot of great community support. Basketball is important at our school." --
North Cedar Coach Scott Jackson.
