West Lyon rolls past Dunkerton for 1A championship

DES MOINES - The West Lyon Wildcats could be the best eighth seed the boys' state tournament has seen.Some hyperbole there, for sure, but it's not an outrageous statement. West Lyon more or less rolled through the Class 1A field this week, including a 60-32 destruction of Dunkerton in Friday night's championship game.Brandon Snyder scored a game-high 23 points, and Kaleb Heyer had 10 points and 16 rebounds as the Wildcats backed up their Class A state football title with one in hoops. The beneficiaries of playing in a 2A-3A conference, they finished with a 23-5 record but beat top-seeded unbeaten Newell-Fonda in the quarterfinals, then blew out Keota and Dunkerton to win with a flourish.West Lyon took a 14-4 lead after a quarter, and made it 34-14 at halftime. Nick Anderson was the only player for Dunkerton (27-2) to score in double figures (11 points).Senior center Kody Kuenstling, a 6-foot-11 Drake signee, was limited to just six points on 3-of-10 shooting from the field.
