Happy 80th Birthday Phyllis Sabotta on May 7

Phyllis started her life in Gary, IN, as the daughter of the police Captain of Detectives. America was recovering from the depression and Gary, with its steel mills, was growing as we entered WWII. After graduating high school, Phyllis moved to Chicago and worked as clerical staff typing 120 WPM on a typewriter - for those that remember what a typewriter is. Moving around from Chicago to North Carolina to Wyoming, Phyllis found her way to Cedar Rapids and called it home.

One of the first activities in Cedar Rapids was building the house that she still lives in with her five cats. Phyllis learned many things during this process, including ceramic tile installation, without Google. As a devoted wife, mother of nine and grandmother to 17 children, she has learned multiple medical terms and procedures from decades of trips to the doctor or hospital. Some of the more recent trips have been from run-ins with a ladder. Large families require a full-time thrifty parent. Phyllis provided clerical support to Quentin's part-time home psychology practice, and as the children grew, she started delivering the Cedar Rapids Gazette, followed by a job at the U.S. Post Office.

Traveling with a large family was another adventure. Three different homemade campers made vacations to Disney World, the World's Fair in Spokane, WA, Quebec, Canada, and several places inbetween possible.

As a longtime member of St. Ludmila's, organist and member of the choir, we are celebrating her birthday today, May 7, with a 10:30 a.m. Mass followed by birthday cake in the parish social hall from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Please stop in and wish Phyllis a happy 80th birthday.
