Wednesday's Class 3A-4A substate final baseball games

Jul. 19, 2011 5:44 pm
All games begin at 7 p.m. Winners move on to state tournament in Des Moines next week.
CLASS 3A
Waukon (14-24) at Oelwein (18-14): These Northeast Iowa Conference rivals played three times in the regular season, with Oelwein winning twice. Waukon upset Decorah in its district opener, then got a four-hit shutout from Logan Wood in a 2-0 district win over Crestwood. Oelwein beat Independence and West Delaware in districts. The Huskies have been to state six times, the last time in 2002. Waukon advanced in 1998 and 1999.
Marion (25-16) vs. Williamsburg (19-19) at Van Horne: Marion swept the regular-season series, 10-3 and 7-2. A potent offense is led by seniors Zach Nielsen (.446 batting average, 52 RBIs) and Kasey Semler (.413, 18 stolen bases), among others. Williamsburg's Tyler Greiner is hitting .405 with six home runs. The Raiders have made it to state twice, the last time in 2002. Marion, whose head coach Steve Fish won his 500th career game late in the regular season, were a state qualifier in 2006.
Davenport Assumption (32-9) at Solon (35-4): This is a game worthy of the state tournament. Top-ranked Solon was last year's Class 2A state champ and has been to state three years in a row. Fourth-ranked Assumption has one of Iowa's best programs, with 12 state tournament appearances and eight titles spanning three classes. The teams met in the regular season, with Assumption sweeping a double-header at Solon, 4-1 and 6-4. The Spartans are without all-state pitcher Brandon Shulista, out with a shoulder injury. They rely heavily on top three hitters Derrick Loveless, Nick Day and Marshall Koehn, all hitting .500 or better with more than 50 RBIs each.
Washington, Iowa (28-7) vs. Centerville (11-27) at Ottumwa: Overconfidence might be Washington's toughest task here. The Demons, whose only state appearance was in 1998, have won nine games in a row and 13 of 15. Centerville, whose top four hitters are freshmen, hasn't won 13 games all season. Josh Moore has a team-leading .422 average and has added six wins as a pitcher. Centerville has been to state four times, including a 3A title in 2008.
CLASS 4A
Cedar Rapids Prairie (26-15) at Mason City (32-9): The top two seeds in Substate 2 made it through. Second-ranked Mason City's Jake Peter, a Creighton signee, is one of the state's top players (.419 average, 12 home runs). Pitcher Brandon Platts, a Missouri signee, was a 13th-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates but hasn't thrown since late June because of a sore arm. Prairie has won 16 of its last 18 games behind a high-powered offense that has produced a whopping 42 home runs. That includes D.J. Utley's school-record 14. Fellow senior Anthony Gagliardi (10 HRs, 6-3 pitching record, 1.66 ERA) is the likely starting pitcher Wednesday.
Dubuque Hempstead (21-18) at Cedar Rapids Kennedy (30-8): Can the sixth-ranked Cougars repeat? Well, they've got to get to Des Moines first, obviously. Kennedy swept Hempstead in the regular season, 6-3 and 11-0. Austin Christensen (7-0) hasn't lost on the mound all season, and he'll almost certainly be pitching Wednesday. The Nebraska signee it hitting .562 with 18 home runs. Hempstead upset Cedar Rapids Xavier in Monday's substate semifinals, 9-8. Senior Aaron Collins shutdown Western Dubuque in the substate first round and will likely pitch Wednesday. He did not face Kennedy in the regular season.
Iowa City High (20-21) at Iowa City West (30-10): The fourth-ranked Trojans look to get back to state for the third year in a row. They finished runner-up in 2009 and 2010. City High hasn't been to state since 2003. West won the two regular-season games, 11-1 and 10-0. City High lost nine of its last 10 regular-season games but knocked off Muscatine and Burlington to get to this game. Connor Alberhasky (6-2, 1.54 ERA) will pitch Wednesday. Adam Prybil has 11 home runs. Iowa Hawkeye signee Ryan Rumpf has a .509 batting average and 24 doubles for West. Jeremy Cronk has 13 home runs.
