Find other uses for speed camera money
N/A
Nov. 7, 2010 12:52 am
I heard the Cedar Rapids police chief on the radio stating the speed cameras were not about revenue at all, only the safety of the drivers on Interstate 380. I'm sure the majority of the people looked at this as a smoke screen or window dressing.
Let me suggest another angle.
I will assume what the police chief said is gospel. In doing so, I can only assume the city will rethink allocating the revenue to the Police Department, as that is what taxes are for. And being the caring people they are, they will find better places to use the money.
There are a number of places where the revenue can go. One is lowering property taxes. Or for the homeless, or assisting with food or Christmas presents for needy kids.
I am sure the police chief and the City Council will see the light and decide this is the way all this revenue can be used.
This would put an immediate end to any controversy as to whether what the police chief said was a smoke screen.
