Only the chimney remained after fire leveled an abandoned farmhouse near Troy Mills this morning.
Firefighters responded to 3105 Campfire Rd. when the blaze was reported around 5:15 a.m. Troy Mills Fire Chief Joe Fiala said the two-story house was already burned to the ground by the time they arrived.
"It was engulfed and it was gone," Fiala said.
Later, small flames danced around the charred debris. Firefighters monitored them as the sun rose.
Fiala said the farmhouse has been vacant for at least a year and a half. The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but electricity was running to the house, Fiala said.
When asked if the fire is suspicious, he said, "We don't know."
No one was injured.
"We just made sure the scene was safe, with the power poles and everything," Fiala said.
The house is owned by Mark and Marcey Liebe, according to the Linn County Assessor's Office.
Firefighters stayed on the scene until 7:40 a.m.
