Support lessens for Republican legislators
The Gazette Opinion Staff
May. 29, 2011 11:28 am
Voters sided with Republicans in the 2010 election, ostensibly to create jobs lost as a result of George W. Bush's great recession and to fix the economy. Now it appears buyer's remorse is setting in. Folks have had it already with Republican far-right social engineering, undermining the working middle class and tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Polling numbers show less support for Republican legislators and governors, including Iowa's own self-proclaimed dictator, Gov. Terry Branstad.
The latest example of voter regret occurred last week in Buffalo, N.Y. New York's 26th Congressional District has been Republican for years, supporting John McCain in 2008 and the GOP House member overwhelmingly in 2010. On May 24, voters sent another message by electing Democrat Kathy Hochul over the Republican who supported Rep. Paul Ryan's “death to Medicare as we know it” plan. One would think that Republicans would notice that the voters are rejecting their war-on-the-middle-class approach, but I wouldn't bet on it.
