City officially declares gardening season over
Oct. 18, 2010 3:36 pm
Another sure sign of the changing seasons is taking place this week at the various Cedar Rapids city garden plots.
The city parks and recreation department plans to officially declare the gardening season over by clearing the leased garden plots this week. Gardeners were required to remove any remaining produce, plant stakes and other gardening items by last Sunday. Parks crews will mow the plots and plow them under to get ready for winter.
The city offers garden plots for people to rent for a small fee at Tuma, Ellis and Squaw Creek Parks.
Mark Jacobs, North East Side Park Supervisor for the Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department, mows the city garden plots at Tuma Park in Cedar Rapids, Monday October 18, 2010. The leased plots, which can also be found in Ellis and Squaw Creek Parks, are being cleared marking the end of growing season. They will be plowed in the next few days in preparation of winter.
