Former Hawkeye Tyler Smith arrested

Jan. 2, 2010 3:37 pm
Tennessee has suspended four basketball players indefinitely, including former Iowa forward Tyler Smith, after they were arrested and charged with gun possession during a traffic stop in Knoxville, Tenn., on Friday.
A police report said a car carrying the four players was stopped for speeding. Officers smelled marijuana in the car and found a handgun with an altered serial number, as well as alcohol.
The other arrested with Smith were junior point guard Melvin Goins, junior center Brian Williams, and sophomore guard Cameron Tatum.
"They are all suspended indefinitely," Tennessee Coach Bruce Pearl told ESPN. "I'm extremely disappointed, this is embarrassing for the program and the university."
Smith averages 11.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He played one year at Iowa before transferring to Tennessee to be near his ailing father, who ended up passing away.
Because of his situation, the
NCAA waived its one-year transfer policy, making Smith immediately eligible to play for the Volunteers.
