Local government has become greedy
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Apr. 28, 2010 12:15 am
Shame on the leadership of Cedar Rapids, specifically Ron Corbett, the City Council, and Greg Eyerly, for being willing to take the $16 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on the Sinclair property that cost the city only $4 million a few years ago.
Did the value of the land and property truly increase five fold in the last four years? Was the rented warehouse space really generating that much extra money for the city?
What dishonest little pigs we have become to excitedly hope to receive money from the inflated values of “insignificant buildings.”
In the past, this would have been called swindling and is akin to insurance fraud. Only now the “insurance company” is the federal government, paying out unwarranted untold millions to the greedy, grasping hands of local government.
Have we stooped so low as to forget that FEMA money is really our own tax money? Come on, Cedar Rapids, our scruples are at stake here.
