How to lose weight, live longer

Linn County Master Gardener, Claire Smith, wrote the following about the benefits of gardening:
I saw a headline the other day that said something to the effect that if you want to live longer, you should try gardening. The newspaper article claims that research shows gardening will add years and years to your life. What a deal, huh! Today I saw a short spiel on T.V. that says working hard in the garden can burn up to 400 calories in an hour. WOW! One of my favorite Disney movies lines, “Keep movin', movin, movin” is a great motivation for me and my 3- and 8-year-old gardening assistants.
The exercise of gardening boosts energy and self esteem. Digging in the dirt can be a time for just you. Or it's a wonderful activity the family can enjoy and learn more about nature.
It's getting to be the time of year when we begin (just begin) thinking about putting our gardens to bed for the winter. If you're one of those who insists on raking your leaves, begin with a little easy raking-maybe five or ten minutes-and then spend a little time just leaning on the rake and breathing easy before you start in again. Pace yourself. Being in a hurry will serve to strain muscles. Take breaks to avoid over exertion. Vary the task and the muscles you're using by adding watering or pulling weeds.
It really isn't necessary to impress the neighbors with how much you can do. Use a wagon or wheel barrow to move mulch and dirt. Your tool shed should be sporting ergonomic tools- a good idea for any age.
It's important to stay hydrated. Most lawn mowers sport cup holders now. The recommendation is to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are working.
Being outside and exposed to sunlight can boost vitamin D intake. Definitely slosh on the sun screen. Early morning and evening are optimum times to work outside. Remember to wear a wide brimmed hat to cover your face and ears.
Active yard and garden work will definitely get your heart pumping. Gardening lets you be out in the fresh air building some muscles, burning some calories and beautifying your yard all without having to pay a membership fee. So get up, get out, get gardening.
